I Say if My Life Wasnt Funny Itd Just Be True and That Is Unacceptable Carrie Fisher

As Hollywood royalty, Carrie Fisher may not have needed to be prolific, witty, and endearing, but she was all of that and then some.

The daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds, Fisher was born into the industry. She made her onscreen debut in 1975's Shampoo, but it was her role as Princess Leia in 1977's Star Wars IV -- A New Hope that shot her to overnight fame.

Fisher -- who died at age 60 on Tuesday, four days after going into cardiac arrest aboard an airplane -- was more than just an actress, however. She was also a successful writer, penning many books including the semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge in 1987 and its subsequent screenplay; an autobiographical one-woman play and its nonfiction book, 2008's Wishful Drinking; and her most recent memoir, The Princess Diarist, released this year. She was also an impressive script doctor, polishing a number of well-known movies in the '90s, including Hook, Sister Act, and The Wedding Singer, though she was never credited by name as a writer for any of the films.

It's no surprise that a woman who had such an impressive way with words also left behind a number of quotes that aren't just poignant and acerbic -- in some cases, they're phrases to live by.

Here are a few of her best:

On Star Wars

"Forty-three years ago, George Lucas ruined my life. And I mean that in the nicest possible way... People are still asking me if I knew Star Wars was going to be a big hit. Yes, of course I knew. We all knew. The only one who didn't know was George Lucas." -- from Wishful Drinking

"There's no way to prepare for seeing yourself rendered as a 12-inch plastic doll." -- told to Esquire in 2002

"It's hard to date once you're a big Star Wars star, because you don't want to give people the ability to say, 'I had sex with Princess Leia.'" -- reportedly told to The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley

"Leia follows me like a vague smell."

"Even in space, there's a double standard." -- on why Leia never got a light saber, The Late Show With Stephen Colbertin 2016

On Mental Illness

"But ultimately, I feel I'm very sane about how crazy I am." -- fromWishful Drinking

"Stay afraid, but do it anyway. What's important is the action. You don't have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow." -- told to the Herald-Tribune in 2013

"Having waited my entire life to get an award for something, I now get awards all the time for being mentally ill. I'm apparently very good at it." - from Wishful Drinking

On Drugs

"I never used my fingernail for drugs. I used dollars or tiny spoons like any other respectable former drug addict." -- Twitter, 2012

"I never could take alcohol. I always said I was allergic to alcohol, and that's actually a definition to alcoholism -- an allergy of the body and an obsession of the mind. So I didn't do other kinds of drugs until I was about 20. Then, by the time I was 21 it was LSD. I didn't love cocaine, but I wanted to feel any way other than the way I did, so I'd do anything." -- told to the Herald-Tribune in 2013

"I have a chemical imbalance that, in its most extreme state, will lead me to a mental hospital... I am mentally ill. I can say that. I am not ashamed of that. I survived that, I'm still surviving it, but bring it on." -- told to Diane Sawyer on PrimeTime in 2000

On Life

"If my life wasn't funny it would just be true, and that is unacceptable." -- from Wishful Drinking

"Life is a cruel, horrible joke and I am the punch line.:" -- from Postcards From the Edge
"Instant gratification takes too long." -- reported by the Los Angeles Times in 1987 and included in Postcards From the Edge

"Sometimes you can only find Heaven by slowly backing away from Hell." -- from Wishful Drinking

"No motive is pure. No one is good or bad-but a hearty mix of both. And sometimes life actually gives to you by taking away." -- from Wishful Drinking

On Her Famous Parents

On Death

"You know what's funny about death? I mean other than absolutely nothing at all? You'd think we could remember finding out we weren't immortal. Sometimes I see children sobbing airports and I think, 'Aww. They've just been told.'" -- from Wishful Drinking
